Well technically not my first diamond since my fiancee now owns it.  It's the first diamond I ever bought.  I got her a set of diamond earrings for one of our anniversaries (thats the first and second I guess).  We got engaged about a year ago and I got her an amazing diamond ring.

I've been hooked and in love with diamonds ever since.  I still don't have one of my own though...

Do some research online.  Its a really good source to start to understand what things affect the price of a diamond.  That way when you start shopping you'll know what you're looking.

You'll want to learn about cut, colour, clarity and carat.

I actually ended up buying my diamond online.  The mark up in retail stores is unbelievable!

Best place to start is to find a diamond broker or diamond jeweler who will show you how THEY buy diamonds. There is a standard for dealers when it comes to determining actual value for a diamond. So find out who is willing to show you things like Rapaport and the other esoteric components of gem value that the dealers pay attention to. There's quite a bit more involved that "4C's".  Next, Determine your maximum budget. Then shape. The carat weight range within a .50 ct swing in either direction minimum. then look at stones in person and see what your eyes catch and what they don't. most americans don't like to pay for things they can't notice, so the hands on is crucial to the shopping process most of the time.

When buying any type of diamond jewelry for a girl, always be aware of her preference. Does she like the vintage or antique style jewelry or the modern and hip ones? Does she like to be noticed and have a high profile diamond setting on her ring or does she prefer the low key type? To answer these questions, it is necessary to do a little sleuthing. If you are already allowed in her house, try to look for signs of her jewelry style by looking at her pictures and noting what type of jewelry she was wearing, or to spy through her jewelry box for tell-tale signs of her jewelry preferences. Again, do this only if you are already allowed in her house. Never, I repeat, never do this by breaking into her house. This will make you look like a creepy stalker.

The next step in buying diamond jewelry for a girl you are courting is by knowing how much money you are willing to spend for it. If you're down-on-your-luck and have little or no extra money to spend, then forget about buying her diamond jewelry and try to woo her using your charms. If she insists on the diamond jewelry in return for her undying love, then ditch the girl and look for somebody else. There are a lot of girls out there that would love you for just who you are and not for how much you're worth. But if your budget permits, go ahead and buy her diamonds. Just be sure to purchase a diamond jewelry that is within your budget. Diamonds might drive girls crazy but they are not an assurance that you will win her heart immediately and therefore more dating is still required.

There's something about firsts. The first doll, bike, book or crush. But when there's no first, there's the next best thing. The Coimbatore-based jewellery company Kirtilals couldn't be the first jewellery store on Bangalore's Richmond Road, so they did the next best thing — something close to a first — they produced a little temptation, My First Diamond.
