Anyone out there have experience in investing in diamonds?  Is this something that people usually buy and sell quickly or are there people that hold them long term as an investment?

This is something I would be interested in.  But how do you get started?

I would like to know more about it.

I hear about Gold in the markets but not sure what ticker or collection of tickers represents the industry.

I wonder if it is the same for diamonds.

Its true you here so much about gold, silver & oil but I have never heard about investing in diamonds.

I wonder if you could make a lot of money now getting in before most people consider it.  Then if everybody else starts you'll have diamonds that skyrocket in value (hopefully).

Unless you are in the industry or have a very trusted source that is in the diamond industry, don't "invest" in diamonds. It is true, they can have fantastic return, but the sources available to the public... even those that claim to be wholesale.... are not the best place to buy. If you can buy a second hand stone from a friend and have the opportunity to get quotes from dealers before you pay then it might be worth considering. If you can buy at the price the dealers are offering you or for less.... then I’d consider it. But otherwise stay away. It is too closed and too complex and there are too many esoteric components to gem value for the non-pro to confidently buy diamonds as an investment.    Little illustration:
Have a good friend who asked me to look at two stones he bought more than 25 years ago as investment stones.  He bought them from an importer in New York. They had their certifications and papers and appraisals etc. I told him before I saw the stones that while investing in diamonds is a tough racket, I was pretty certain --because of the time frame and that diamond value, being controlled, usually goes up-- he had made a few bucks.  To our horror, the stones were worth less than 1/4 of what he paid 25 years ago. And diamond prices had gone way up since then!! Thankfully he didn't need the money and was content setting them in earrings for his wife. But he is a very bright guy, wise investor all across the board in many different arenas....  just goes to show.

I guess it's true.   I would really have to trust someone because I wouldn't even know if the stones were real or not.

Thanks for the advice.

but in reality, it's really hard to trust someone. Much better if you will buy these things in trusted stores.
