Engagement Ring in left hand????

Hi,
Do you know why people wear their Engagement Ring in their left hand third finger?

I didn’t realise that the engagement ring is meant to be worn on the third finger of the left hand? I’ve always thought it was worn on your ring finger on your left hand! Not that it bothers me but if you like following traditions and etiquette then this is worth noting.
